An HO-1: Basic Form, as the name suggests, is the most basic homeowners insurance policy that you can get. Let’s go over the basics so that you can better understand this insurance policy to make the best decision for your needs and budget.

What is Homeowners Insurance?

Homeowners insurance policies, which come in 8 different main types, are designed to protect your home and belongings. Naturally, different types of homeowners insurance policies offer different levels of protection based on your needs and budget.

How does Homeowners Insurance Protect Your Home?

Homeowners insurance protects your home by acting as a financial safety net. It accomplishes this in many different ways depending on which policy you end up choosing. Some of these include the following:

  • Helps pay for damage to the physical structure your home

  • Helps pay for damage to any detached structures

  • Reimburses you for stolen or damaged belongings

  • Helps pay for temporary living expenses if your house becomes unhabitable

  • Provides liability protection for if someone is injured on your property

Different homeowners insurance policies protect you based on a list of perils. Perils refer to different unexpected events that can cause damage to your home and/or belongings. Some examples of perils would include fire, theft, or weather damage.

How does an HO-1 Form Work?

An HO-1 Basic Form Policy provides coverage based on a specific list of perils. Any damage the home sustains from perils that occur that are not listed in your policy will not be protected by the policy. Additionally, most HO-1 forms do not protect personal belongings.

Because of its limited protection, HO-1 policies are not widely offered.

Is an HO-1 Form Right for Me?

Naturally, HO-1 forms are going to be the most affordable homeowners insurance. Because of its limited protection, HO-1 forms generally have the lowest premiums.

That being said, because of its limited protection, there are many drawbacks to an HO-1 policy. Many mortgage lenders will not accept HO-1 forms to protect their investment. Additionally, this type of homeowners insurance does not generally include liability protection, meaning if someone were to be injured on your property, you would be liable for paying he medical expenses.

Because there are so many types of homeowners insurance, there are other affordable options for homeowners insurance that can offer a higher level of protection.
